Nãm Mushrooms: Our 2024 Annual Impact & Sustainability Report
A Note from the CEO
Growing food is one of the most rewarding and meaningful endeavors—it meets the most essential and basic human need. At Nãm Mushrooms, we believe that cultivating food locally represents one of the most tangible steps toward sustainability. Agriculture is both a vital foundation of society and a significant contributor to climate change. By growing food in urban areas, reducing emissions through local distribution, and promoting vegetarian diets, we’re proving that sustainable change is possible, one mushroom at a time.
Our Mission
At Nãm Mushrooms, we aim to demonstrate that a circular economy can thrive and that reconnecting people with their food in city centers is not only possible but essential. By transforming waste into delicious food and giving back to the earth, we’re creating a regenerative system that serves both people and the planet.
Highlights of 2024
- Auchan Partnership: Expanded our distribution network through a partnership with Auchan, bringing our mushrooms to more communities.
- Full-Scale Factory: In 2024, we reached full completion of our factory in Odivelas. Reaching our production goals!
- Big new clients: Many more B2B clients joined the Nãm mushrooms Family!
- Lion’s Mane Cultivation: Introduced the cultivation of Lion’s Mane mushrooms, a nutrient-rich variety with growing popularity.
- Bio-material: Successfully introduced the LumiNãm initiative, advancing our efforts in sustainable urban farming.
Impact Report
- Coffee Waste to Mushrooms: Every year, we transform around 60 tons of coffee grounds into 40 tons of mushrooms. Since 2019, we’ve repurposed over 150 tons of coffee grounds into delicious mushrooms.
- Carbon Emissions Reduction: By distributing locally, our mushrooms travel an average of just 15 km, compared to the 1,500 km typical in Europe. This drastically reduces CO2 emissions.
- Fertilizer Contribution: Our production surplus becomes an excellent fertilizer. Since 2019, we’ve returned more than 250 tons of fertilizer to the soil in partnership with CML (Lisbon City Council).
- CO2 Reduction: According to our impact reports, we’ve eliminated over 140 tons of CO2 since 2019, equivalent to:
- Capturing CO2 from 2,600 trees annually (the size of 3.5 Jardim da Estrela parks).
- Capturing CO2 over five years equivalent to an 8.8-hectare cork oak forest, twice the size of the Ribeirinho do Oriente forest park.
- Removing 659 cars from circulation annually.
- B Corp Certified Since 2022: We proudly maintain our certification, proving our commitment to social and environmental performance.
Lessons Learned
To make a real impact, it’s crucial to strike the right balance between scaling operations and delivering tangible, community-level results. We’ve learned that focusing on local solutions amplifies our overall contribution to a sustainable future.
Looking Ahead
Exciting news is on the horizon for Nam Mushrooms—we’re dreaming big! While we can’t share all the details yet, we’re working toward even greater impact, with ambitious plans to scale our operations, expand our product line, and deepen our commitment to sustainability.
